Fundamental attribution error

We explain other people's behaviour by their character and underrate the situation they were in.

We haven't confirmed a live marketing or UX example of the fundamental attribution error. The evidence is mixed (provisional).

What is Fundamental attribution error?

Fundamental attribution error is a behavioural bias (judgement family): we explain other people's behaviour by their character and underrate the situation they were in. When judging other people, we tend to over-credit their character and under-credit their situation. Nudgeswipe rates the evidence as mixed. The original study

Ross (1977), The intuitive psychologist and his shortcomings: Distortions in the attribution process.

What it found
Ross (1977) named the fundamental attribution error as the first bias of the 'intuitive psychologist': a 'general tendency to overestimate the importance of personal or dispositional factors relative to environmental influences' (p. 184).

The research

When judging other people, we tend to over-credit their character and under-credit their situation. How strong this is depends on context and culture: in East Asian samples the bias is weaker when situational pressures are obvious (Choi, Nisbett & Norenzayan, 1999).

● Mixed evidence (provisional)

Provisional rating: we cite only the original paper so far. It stays provisional until a replication or meta-analysis is added.

Mixed evidence: effect sizes vary widely across studies. Treat it as something to test, not a law.

Key takeaways

  1. Honest nudge

In support and onboarding copy, point to the situation ("this step is confusing") rather than the user.

  2. Dark-pattern line

Copy that pins a product's problem on a person's character (for example 'customers who miss payments are careless') so readers blame the person, not the design.
