IKEA effect
We value what we helped build.
We value things more when we've helped make them.
Norton, Mochon & Ariely (2012), The IKEA effect: when labor leads to love.
What is IKEA effect?
IKEA effect is a behavioural bias (experience family): we value things more when we've helped make them. People value products they assembled themselves more highly, provided they finish them. Nudgeswipe rates the evidence as strong. Source: Norton, Mochon & Ariely (2012), The IKEA effect: when labor leads to love.
The original study
Norton, Mochon & Ariely (2012), The IKEA effect: when labor leads to love.
- Method
- Participants assembled IKEA boxes, folded origami or built Lego sets, then bid for their own creations or identical ones made by others.
- What it found
- People valued items they had built themselves more than identical items they hadn't; the effect disappeared when they built and then destroyed their work, or failed to complete it.
Published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology in 2012 (online 2011).
