Step by step

  1. 1
    Zero-price effect

The hero headline reads "Your next 30 days, on us: welcome to everything Prime".

  2. 2
    Zero-price effect

Below, "Unlock the best of Amazon with Prime" lists benefits as icons (delivery, video, deals).

The psychology

Why it nudges

"On us" frames the trial as a gift rather than a cheaper price: the zero-price effect (free feels different from cheap). We captured the hero only, not Amazon's current sign-up or cancel flow. Whether this framing lifts trial starts for Amazon is not public.

Context

A retailer whose paid membership bundles delivery, video and deals. The trial converts to a paid plan.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Grey area

Grey area: the hero we captured doesn't show the price after the trial next to "on us". In June 2023 the US FTC sued Amazon, alleging Prime sign-up and cancellation used dark patterns; Amazon settled in September 2025 ($2.5bn total) and agreed to clearer disclosures and easier cancellation. That case covered the US; our capture is UK. See deceptive.design/hidden-subscription and deceptive.design/obstruction.

Steal this, honestly

  1. If the trial is truly free, say so plainly, and state what it costs afterwards in the same view.

What to test: "30 days, on us" vs "Free 30-day trial". Measure trial starts and month-2 retention.

Next: run it on your product

ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
