What to steal

  1. If the page is missing, say so, and say whose fault it was.
  2. Keep the admission about a real, small miss. This one is the 404 itself.

What to test next: This 404 vs a plain “page not found” with a home link. Measure who continues to a product page, and who can say afterwards that Innocent took the blame.

In plain words

Why it works

Innocent uses the pratfall effect: a small, real slip can make a capable brand more likeable (Aronson, Willerman & Floyd 1966). The page says “CONGRATULATIONS”, “you’ve just found our error 404 page” and, in red, “whose fault was this ?”. On the red band: “We’re not ones to point fingers, but it was probably ours. After all, we have a strong track record of making mistakes.” The sentence after that runs off the bottom of this crop. The fault they admit is a missing page, which is a real one. Whether the joke makes people stay is not public.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Honest nudge

Honest nudge: they admit a real miss, the missing page, and the copy does not blame the visitor. This crop cuts the sentence after “making mistakes.”
