Babbel runs a live countdown on a 20% "Lifetime" code
Step by step
- 1Incentive
Top banner: "Use code BOO20 for 20% off Lifetime! 👻"
- 2Urgency
A ticking timer beside it. Two captures on 16 Oct 2026, 20 minutes apart, showed "15 days : 04 hours : 58 minutes : 22 seconds" (12:00 BST) and "15 days : 04 hours : 38 minutes : 21 seconds" (12:20 BST): a steady countdown, no reset between them.

"Over 25 million subscriptions sold!" sits above the hero.
The psychology
Why it nudges
A live countdown adds urgency; the ticking seconds make the deadline feel present. The 20% code is the incentive behind it. Whether this lifts Lifetime sales for Babbel is not public.

Context
A paid language-learning app with a seasonal (Halloween) promo on its Lifetime plan.
Honest nudge or dark pattern?
Grey area
Grey area: a countdown is honest only if the offer really ends then. Our two captures (16 Oct 2026, 12:00 and 12:20 BST) counted down consistently, but both were on the same day, so we can't yet say whether the timer resets after it ends. We'll re-check on a later date. See deceptive.design/fake-urgency.
Steal this, honestly
- If you use a timer, tie it to a real end date and don't reset it.
What to test: Timer vs plain dated banner. Measure code use and refunds.
Next: run it on your product

Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
