Shopify makes starting cost $1 a month

Step by step
- 1
Headline: "You've got plans. Us too."
- 2
Under it: "Try 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months."
- 3
The plan cards then show full prices, e.g. Basic $29/mo.
Prices quoted in dollars ($), exactly as shown on the page we captured. Prices vary by region and change over time.
The psychology
Why it nudges
Shopify uses present bias: a tiny cost now feels far smaller than the later $29+ a month. Once billing is set up, the plan rolls on unless the merchant acts (status quo bias). Results are not public.

Context
An ecommerce platform selling to new merchants. The page we saw from a UK address showed US dollar prices. The low intro price likely helps merchants get through store setup before full billing starts.
Honest nudge or dark pattern?
Conditional
Honest nudge if the move to full price is clearly communicated and cancelling is easy. Otherwise it becomes a hidden subscription or hard to cancel. See deceptive.design/hidden-subscription.
Steal this, honestly
- Replace a free trial with a token first payment if you need committed users.
- Show the full price on the same screen, as Shopify's plan cards do.
- Remind users before the intro price ends.
What to test: Free trial vs $1 intro. Measure activation (first sale) and conversion to full price.
Next: run it on your product

Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
