Headspace preselects annual and shows it per month

Step by step
- 1
Annual card is ticked and labelled "Best value": "Annual – 14 days free – $69.99 $5.83 USD/month".
- 2
Monthly: "7 days free – $12.99 USD/month".
- 3
"After your free trial, the annual subscription is $69.99 USD and automatically renews each year."
Prices quoted in dollars ($), exactly as shown on the page we captured. Prices vary by region and change over time.
The psychology
Why it nudges
Headspace uses a default (annual already ticked) and price framing (the annual price restated per month). A longer trial on annual adds a reason to keep the default. The renewal line is plain. Results are not public.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?
Honest nudge
Honest nudge as captured: preselection is fine only with full disclosure, and the total, renewal and cancel are shown before the CTA. USD capture. See deceptive.design/preselection.
Steal this, honestly
- If you preselect a plan, show both the total and per-month figure.
- Put the renewal sentence right under the plans.
- Offer a real difference (here, trial length) not just a label.
What to test: Annual preselected vs no preselection. Measure annual share and first-year refunds.
Next: run it on your product
Apply this with your agent
Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
