Step by step

  1. 1

Paid plans carry "50% OFF FOR THREE MONTHS*".

  2. 2

Pro shows "$US8.75" struck through next to "$US4.38 per user/month, when paying monthly".

  3. 3

Business+ carries a "BEST VALUE" badge.

  4. 4

Customer logos sit under the headline "Choose a paid subscription that's built for businesses".

Prices quoted in dollars ($), exactly as shown on the page we captured. Prices vary by region and change over time.

The psychology

Why it nudges

Slack uses a reference price: the struck-through full price is the comparison point for judging the discounted one. The logo strip adds social proof. We captured this on 16 Oct; an earlier visit showed monthly vs annual per-user pricing instead, so Slack's offers change. Results are not public.

Context

A B2B collaboration tool selling to teams on its public pricing page, with prices in US dollars when we visited. A three-month discount is likely aimed at moving free teams to paid.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Conditional

Honest nudge if $8.75 is the real price after three months. Inflated 'was' prices would be deceptive.

Steal this, honestly

  1. When you run an intro offer, show the real full price struck through next to it.
  2. Say exactly how long the discount lasts, next to the price.
  3. Put recognisable customer logos near the plan cards.

What to test: Discounted price shown alone vs next to the struck-through full price. Measure paid conversions and churn after month 3.

Next: run it on your product

ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
