Social proof
When unsure, we copy what people like us do.
When unsure, we look at what people like us do.

What is Social proof?
Social proof is a behavioural bias (social family): when unsure, we look at what people like us do. Descriptive norms (what most people do) shift behaviour, especially when the reference group feels similar. Nudgeswipe rates the evidence as strong. Source: Goldstein, Cialdini & Griskevicius (2008), A room with a viewpoint.
The original study
Goldstein, Cialdini & Griskevicius (2008), A room with a viewpoint.
- Method
- A field experiment in a hotel compared towel-reuse signs: a standard environmental appeal vs a descriptive norm ("the majority of guests reuse their towels").
- What it found
- The descriptive-norm sign led to more towel reuse than the standard environmental message.
Replications and critiques
- Bohner & Schlüter (2014) repeated the study in two German hotels (N = 724 and N = 204): both messages beat no message, but the norm message was not more effective than the standard one. Source →
The research
Descriptive norms (what most people do) shift behaviour, especially when the reference group feels similar. Logo strips, review counts and 'most popular' tags are commercial versions.
● Strong evidence A German hotel replication found no advantage for the norm message (Bohner & Schlüter, 2014).
