Step by step

  1. 1
    Social proof

Listing cards carry a "Guest favourite" badge on the photo.

  2. 2
    Price & attribute framing

Each card shows a total for specific dates, e.g. "22–24 Jan · £465 total", not a nightly rate.

  3. 3
    Social proof

A star rating such as "5.0" or "4.95" sits beside the price.

Prices quoted in pounds (£), exactly as shown on the page we captured. Prices vary by region and change over time.

The psychology

Why it nudges

The "Guest favourite" badge and star average are social proof: other guests' ratings stand in for your own judgement. Showing a dated total instead of a nightly rate frames the price as the real amount you'll pay. Whether these lift bookings for Airbnb is not public.

Context

A two-sided marketplace where trust in an unknown host is the main hurdle, and where nightly prices that grow at checkout have drawn complaints.

What they've said publicly

  • Airbnb first launched total price display in 2019 in parts of Europe, Australia, Canada and Korea, added an optional toggle in the US and 200+ other countries and regions, and made total price the global standard on 21 April 2025. It says almost 17 million guests booked using the toggle.

  • When it announced the toggle (7 Nov 2022), Airbnb also said search ranking would prioritise total price instead of nightly price.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Honest nudge

Honest nudge: totals up front reduce drip pricing. A badge becomes misleading if the criteria behind it are hidden or paid for.

Steal this, honestly

  1. Summarise reviews into one clear badge, and define what earns it.
  2. Show the all-in price people will actually pay, at the point they compare options.

What to test: Total vs nightly price on listing cards. Measure checkout completion and post-booking complaints about price.

Next: run it on your product
