YouTube Premium promises a reminder 7 days before the free month ends
Step by step
- 1Zero-price effect
The main button reads "Try 1 month for US$0".
- 2Regret aversion
Below it: "You'll be reminded 7 days before your trial ends. Recurring billing."
- 3Social proof
"Join over 125 million Premium members".
- 4Price & attribute framing
The annual plan is "12 months for US$159.99… Save 15% vs. monthly plan" and "Doesn't automatically renew".
Prices quoted in dollars ($), exactly as shown on the page we captured (US-priced). Prices vary by region and change over time.
The psychology
Why it nudges
"US$0" uses the zero-price effect to make starting feel free. The promised reminder 7 days before the trial ends is the second mechanism: it reduces the fear of forgetting to cancel and being charged. The member count and "Save 15% vs. monthly" sit alongside. Whether these lift trials for YouTube is not public.

Context
An ad-free tier sold on top of a free, ad-supported product.
What they've said publicly
YouTube announced 125 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers on 5 March 2025, "including trials". So the "125 million" on the page counts people on free trials too.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?
Conditional
Conditional: the recurring billing and the reminder are stated next to the button. But the page's "Join over 125 million Premium members" reads as paid Premium members, while YouTube's official count includes trials and YouTube Music.
Steal this, honestly
- If you run a free trial, promise a reminder before it bills, and send it.
- Compare plans against each other in plain percentages.
What to test: Trial with vs without a reminder promise. Measure trial starts and refunds or chargebacks.
Next: run it on your product

Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
