Duolingo puts one giant "Get started" in front of everything
Step by step
- 1Friction
The hero has one solid green "GET STARTED" button; "I ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT" sits below it as a quieter outline button.
- 2Friction
The headline promises "The most fun way to learn languages, chess, and more!" No price, no form fields.
- 3Authority
Further down, a "backed by science" section says it uses "research-backed teaching methods".
The psychology
Why it nudges
Duolingo removes friction from the first step: one obvious action, no form, no price on the page. The quieter "already have an account" button keeps returning users moving without competing for attention. The "backed by science" section leans on authority. Whether this layout lifts sign-ups for Duolingo is not public.

Context
A freemium learning app whose web homepage exists mainly to start a new learner or send an existing one back in.
Honest nudge or dark pattern?
Honest nudge
Honest nudge: both paths are clearly labelled and nothing is hidden. "Research shows that it works" is Duolingo's own claim; we haven't checked it.
Steal this, honestly
- Give the homepage one primary action and make the secondary one visibly quieter.
- Delay forms and prices until after the first click if the product is free to start.
- If you claim research backing, link to it.
What to test: Single CTA vs two equal-weight CTAs. Measure started sign-ups and day-7 retention.
Next: run it on your product
Apply this with your agent
Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
