Step by step

  1. 1

"You can cancel your Netflix account at any time."

  2. 2

Steps: go to Manage your membership, tap Cancel, then Finish Cancellation. "That's it! A confirmation email will be sent."

  3. 3

"This is the only way to cancel... Signing out or deleting the Netflix app doesn't cancel your account."

The psychology

Why it nudges

Netflix documents a low-friction cancellation publicly. This is the brand's stated policy from its help centre, not a step-by-step capture of the flow, which could add steps or offers the article doesn't mention. Easy, documented exits remove a reason not to sign up, and the note about deleting the app prevents accidental ongoing charges. Churn effects are not public.

Context

Netflix's help centre article on cancelling, viewed in its US version. A policy example: we did not capture the live cancel flow from a test account.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Honest nudge

Honest: the opposite of the hard-to-cancel pattern. See deceptive.design/hard-to-cancel.

Steal this, honestly

  1. Publish your cancellation steps in plain words.
  2. Keep cancellation to the same number of steps as sign-up.
  3. Warn people about things that look like cancelling but aren't.

What to test: Not an A/B case: treat it as a standard to meet. Track cancellation-related complaints and chargebacks.

Next: run it on your product

Apply this with your agent

Take the steps above into your own flow. The prompt carries this teardown, the honest-vs-dark line and the steps.

ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Cursor open with the prompt filled in (it is also copied, in case the prefill doesn't load). Gemini and Codex don't support prefilled links, so the prompt is copied and the app opens; paste it in.
