Step by step

  1. 1
    Price & attribute framing

Under the headline: "Starts at US$8.99. Cancel at any time."

  2. 2
    Friction

The only field is "Email address", with "Get Started". There's no plan choice yet.

  3. 3
    Regret aversion

The FAQ includes "How do I cancel?"

Prices quoted in dollars ($), exactly as shown on the page we captured (US-priced). Prices vary by region and change over time.

The psychology

Why it nudges

One field ("Email address") keeps the first step light, which removes friction. "Starts at US$8.99" is a "from" price: it leads with the low entry price of the ad-supported plan. The email-first step likely leads into plan choice, but we didn't capture those later steps. "Cancel at any time" and the cancel FAQ reduce the fear of getting stuck. Whether this lifts sign-ups for Netflix is not public.

Context

A subscription streamer whose cheapest plan includes adverts. Higher tiers come later in the flow.

What they've said publicly

  • USA Today reported that Netflix announced a US price rise taking the ad-supported plan from $7.99 to $8.99 a month (the "starts at" price on the page we captured). New prices applied to new members from 26 March 2026; existing members were to be notified over the following weeks.

Honest nudge or dark pattern?

Honest nudge

Honest as captured: the plan is real and cancellation is stated. It becomes a bait-and-switch if the "from" plan is hard to find later in the flow.

Steal this, honestly

  1. If you lead with a "from" price, make sure the cheapest plan is really available.
  2. Ask for one small thing first; save the rest for after the commitment.
  3. Answer "how do I cancel?" on the landing page.

What to test: "Starts at" price vs no price on the landing page. Measure sign-ups and plan mix.

Next: run it on your product
