Goal gradient (incl. endowed progress)

The closer the finish line, the harder we push.

Effort rises as people approach a goal, and a head start makes them more likely to finish.

What is Goal gradient?

Goal gradient is a behavioural bias (motivation family): effort rises as people approach a goal, and a head start makes them more likely to finish. Visible progress towards a reward accelerates effort near the end. Nudgeswipe rates the evidence as strong. Source: Kivetz, Urminsky & Zheng (2006). Endowed progress: Nunes & Drèze (2006).

The original study

Kivetz, Urminsky & Zheng (2006). Endowed progress: Nunes & Drèze (2006).

Method
Field studies including a café reward card; the endowed-progress study gave car-wash customers a 10-stamp card with 2 stamps already filled vs an 8-stamp card.
What it found
Customers bought more often as they neared the reward; the card with 2 free stamps was completed more often, though both needed 8 purchases.
